Fallout 4 Chemistry Station

If you haven't done any crafting at the Chemistry Station, you may not be aware of how valuable some Junk items are which you have been ignoring, such as fertilizer and Abraxo, or even Aid items such as Hubflower and Glowing Fungus.

So here is a list of Junk and Aids which can be used in the Chemistry Station to craft valuable drugs.
Very common items such as glass and steel (in drugs?) are not shown.
The purpose of this list is as a reference in deciding what Junk/Aids to keep.
Below this list is a list of the craftable items, their components, and benefits (and my comments on them).

*Berry Mentats

     +5 Intelligence and highlights enemies for 8 minutes. See below for more info.

Buffjet
     x1 Buffout, x1 Jet
     Slow Time, +3 Strength, +3 Endurance, +65 max Health, and +35 max AP for 15 seconds.
     Not as good as Psycho Jet, but if you have lots of Buffout and Jet, you can make Buffjet just to generate XP.

Bufftats
     x1 Buffout, x1 Mentats
     +3 Strength, +3 Endurance, +65 max Health and +3 Perception for 8 minutes.
     Same comment as Buffjet.

*Grape Mentats
     x2 Hubflower, x1 Mentats, x1 Whiskey
     +5 Charisma, barter 10% better for 8 minutes.
     Clothes with +5 Charisma cuts prices by 33% so this is a bit of a gyp.

Jet
     x2 Fertilizer, x1 Plastic
     Slow Time for 10 seconds.
     The benefits of crafting Jet are
          (1) you get XP for it, and
          (2) you can craft Psycho Jet and other items which get you even more XP, and
          (3) it fetches a decent price when you sell it.

Mentats
     x1 Abraxo Cleaner, x2 Brain Fungus, x1 Lead
     +2 Intelligence and +2 Perception for 5 minutes.
     The benefits of crafting Mentats are like for Jet, plus you get the benefit of having something to do
     with all that damn Abraxo you see lying around everywhere.

Orange Mentats
     x1 Asbestos, x3 Carrot, x1 Mentats
     +5 Perception and +10% VATS Accuracy for 8 minutes.

Psycho
     x1 Acid, x1 Circuitry, x2 Hubflower, x1 Stimpak
     +25% Damage and 25 Damage Resist for 5 minutes.
     Hubflowers are not real common and Grape Mentats also need them.

*Psycho Jet
     x1 Jet, x1 Psycho
     Slow Time, +25% Damage, +35 Damage Resist and +40 Max AP for 15 seconds.
     It doesn't last long, but Chemist perks make it last longer. Psycho is less connonly found. .

Psychobuff
     x1 Buffout, x1 Psycho
     +25% Damage, +3 Strength, +3 Endurance and +65 max Health for 8 minutes.

Fury
     x1 Berserk Syringe, x1 Buffout, Requires Chemist
     +50% Melee Damage, +25 Damage Resist and -5 Perception for 8 minutes.

Jet Fuel
     x5 Flamer Fuel, x1 Jet, Requires Chemist
     +35 Max AP and increased AP regen for 8 minutes.
     If you don't like the Flamer weapon, here's a great use for all the fuel you get for it:
          (1) make a bunch of Jet (above), then
          (2) crank this out and watch the XP pile up, then
          (3) sell the Jet Fuel for 3 times what you get for excess purified water.

Overdrive
     x2 Acid, x1 Nuka Cola, x1 Psycho, Requires Chemist
     +25% Damage and +25% Critical Chance for 8 minutes.

Ultra Jet
     x1 Bloodleaf, x1 Fertilizer, x1 Jet, x2 Plastic, Requires Chemist
     Slow Time and +100 max AP for 15 seconds.

Glowing Blood Pack
     x1 Antiseptic, x1 Blood Pack, x1 Irradiated Blood
     +75 Rad Resist for 10 minutes.

RadAway
     x2 Antiseptic, x3 Glowing Fungus, x1 Plastic, x1 Purified Water
     Removes 300 Rads.

*Refreshing Beverage
     x3 Antiseptic, x1 Blood Pack, x2 Purified Water, x2 RadAway, x1 Stimpak
     Instantly heals you, removes all Rads and cures addictions.
     Load up on drugs going into a battle then celebrate the easy victory with one of these drinks afterwards.
     Blood Packs are not very common, but most vendors sell 2-4 of them at a reasonable price.

Skeeto Spit
     x1 Blood Sac, x1 Bloodleaf, x1 Glass, x1 Steel
     +25 max Health for 20 minutes.
     Not recommended.

Stimpak
     x2 Antiseptic, x1 Blood Pack, x1 Steel
     Restores health, but so do a ton of foods you can cook up and they give you other benefits as well.
     I virtually NEVER take a Stimpak.

*Cutting Fluid
     x2 Acid, x8 Bone, x2 Purified Water, x3 Steel
     Scraps to 3 Oil and 1 Steel.
     Oil is scarce and needed in building turrets and other things.
     The only problem is that Bone is scarce and it takes a lot of it to craft Cutting Fluid.

Grenades and Mines are not shown because they use rare materials to craft items which can easily be replaced by grenades and mines which are commonly found. For example, if you need the power of a Bottlecap Mine, use 2 or 3 Frag mines.

However, there are two things to know if you do want to craft Bottlecap Mines (brought forward from earlier Fallouts).

  1. When you click on a Vault-tec Lunchbox, it will do a magical thing and out will pop its contents (some minor item). Then click on it again to pick up the Lunchbox itself.
  2. The Lunchbox will end up in your Misc. inventory list. When you get home, move it into a work bench inventory in order to make a Bottlecap Mine.

Syringer ammo is not shown because they would appear to do nothing that a good weapon blast couldn't do faster.


Top Craftable Items:

  1. Cutting Fluid. Cutting Fluid scraps down to 3 units of oil and 1 steel. The problem is finding enough bones to make it. You see bones everywhere you go, but F4 only marks a small percent of them for picking up. Then it takes 8 units of bones to make 1 cutting fluid.

    One good place to get bones is at Wildwood Cemetery. It has at least 68 units of bones, which can make 8.5 cutting fluids, which scraps to 24+ units of oil. The bones respawn after a while, so you can return and get another 60+ units of bone as often as you wish. Make a note of the game date (at the bottom of the map screen in PipBoy) each time you go to Wildwood so you will know when you can return and find more. It's been hard trying to come up with an exact respawn time. It doesn't seem to be consistent.

  2. Psycho Jet. Time slows down, you do +25% damage, take 35 less damage and get +40 AP. It takes 1 Jet and 1 Psycho. Ingredients for Jet are plentiful - 2 fertilizer and 1 plastic. Plus you will find lots of Jet laying around. Psycho is scarcer and the Hubflower needed to make it is even scarcer.

    The Hubflower plant (needed to make Psycho as well as Berry Mentats) grows wild around the Commonwealth. A plant may have 5 or 6 flowers, but when you harvest it, you only get 1 unit of Hubflower. Because Hubflowers do respawn (but not as quickly as you might like), they are not the scarcest component on the list.

    Main locations of Hubflowers:

    • Northeast part of the map. Recon Bunker Theta is at map coordinates (P, 1, CC). (See the map.) If you approach it from the southwest (near the east side of Lake Quanapowitt), you will see some hubflowers. Once you reach it, go down the road south of it picking hubflowers on each side of the road until a lot of the river becomes visible on your left and you can't see any hubflowers ahead. Head for the river and go back up north, picking hubflowers on both sides of the river and bloodleaf plants in the river..

      Depending on your level, when you take that last route going north, you will run into some nasty critters, so keep clicking your scanner. Assuming that you got the Spray n' Pray, the critters shouldn't be any problem.

      When you reach the top end of the river, turn and go towards Parsons State Insane Asylum which has a lot of hubflowers in the front.

    • Wildwood Cemetery. This small area not only has over 15 Hubflowers in and around it, but it also has over 60 units of Bone, some Glowing Fungus, and a Hack magazine at the base of the central tree (which has brick paths radiating out from it).

    • Sanctuary area: The 1-5, A-K map shows the location of 30 hubflower plants starting at B-1 and working south and another 20 or so starting at D-1 and working east. While finding them is more complicated than those above, there are a lot more of them. They are marked on the screen map

    Despite a lot of testing, I can't say for sure how long it takes hubflowers to respawn after being picked. Some have come back after a few days and I've gone as long as a month between visits and still not gotten any. To make matters worse, The revised Survival Mode in patch 1.5 is said to have lengthened the spawning time for enemies and loot and thus, presumably, for hubflowers. See the mod GP's 3x Increased Cell Respawn Rate for increasing respawn rates by 3 times.

  3. Berry Mentats help level up faster by giving a boost to intelligence and it highlights enemies, even when floors and walls are in the way, but supplies to make them are scarce. Use the mod linked above.

    A Berry Mentat only lasts 8 minutes, but the Chemist perks increase that time significantly. Also, upgrading your Power Armor chestpiece with BiocomMesh makes chems last 50% longer.

    Take a Berry Mentat before doing any activity which generates a stream of XP, such as crafting or building a settlement. Take one when you enter a building with lots of enemies and you get the XP benefit when you kill them, plus the highlighting feature lets you spot enemies ahead of time to make it easier to find and kill them. It highlights mines and turrets as well as people and creatures.

    Berry Mentats are addictive, but Refreshing Beverage will cure the addiction once the Berry Mentat wears off. The only problem with Berry Mentats is that Anti-Freeze bottles are very scarce. They can be found at these locations. Jamaica Plain and Red Rocket have the most and the bottles will respawn if you wait long enough. You can't fast travel to the Red Rocket, but Wilsons Atomatoys is just across the street, so get close enough to make it register on the map (but watch out for super mutants) and you can fast travel there.

    Tarberry is also somewhat scarce. It is grown at The Slog where you can harvest 8 every few days. There's another 8+ Tarberry on the east edges of the water east of the Slog. Even with power armor on, you can find a narrow part to walk across to it. There are a few Tarberrys in the pools behind the Parsons State Insane Asylum.

  4. Refreshing Beverage cures addictions, heals you completely and instantly, and removes all rads. The components (x3 Antiseptic, x1 Blood Pack, x2 Purified Water, x2 RadAway, x1 Stimpak) are not overly scarce. Blood packs are the scarcest, but most vendors and all doctors sell 2-4 of them at a reasonable price. Greater Mass Blood Clinic has more than a couple of dozen, but you have to fight a bunch of nasty bugs. Mark antiseptics in your inventory to highlight items (such as toothpaste) which have antiseptics in them when looting or buying Junk from merchants.

  5. Grape Mentats raises charisma by 5 and gives 10% better prices with merchants. They also require Hubflowers, so you will have to divide your crop between Grape Mentats and Psycho, though Grape Mentats are the more valuable product.

    Whiskey locations:

    One or two bottles of whiskey can be found in some buildings. Here are a couple that have a lot more in one area.

    • Libertalia has 6 spread around, but you have to fight a lot of raiders. Kinda fun, though. I've been back and seen them respawned, but not when doing the Institute mission.

    • Moonshiner's shack explodes the first time you approach, littering the surrounding woods with bottles of whiskey and 1 still inside. Go to the side of the shack with the patio furniture. The distribution of the bottles is random, but a shopping cart next to the shack will have several and the rest spread out from there. You may find 7 in plain sight or have to look through the weeds and only find 5. (Empty bottles don't count.)

    • Vault 114 has 5, three in the cafeteria.

    • Cabot House has a 4 or 5 bottles spread around.

    Merchants selling whiskey:

    • In Diamond City:
      • Percy(robot)/Myrna sometimes have one.
      • Dugout Inn: Scarlett often has some - up to 5.
      • Wellingham(robot): Colonial Taphouse, usually has 1 or 2 and sometimes more.
        Scarlett and Wellingham combined average 4-5 most of the time.

    • In Goodneighbor:
      • Whitechapel Charlie: Third Rail, usually has 1 or 2.
      • Daisy infrequently has one.

Instead of hauling loot back to my home base, I usually go to Diamond City and sell to the merchants there. The goal is to fool around until you get to 15 to 30 minutes before the hour, then sit on a nearby stool until 7:30 to 7:45, then go to Percy the robot, make sure you have your CHR gear on, take a Grape Mentat, and buy all his 45mm ammo and Missiles, check his Aids for Blood Packs, Tarberry, and Whiskey, then look at his Junk for anything you may need..

When done, wait for Myrna to come out and repeat the process with her, except that you needn't take another Grape Mentat because if you waited until 7:45 or so, the Grape Mentant you took already should still be in effect. Then go to Arturo and the other merchants.

If you do this frequently to stock up on ammo and get rid of loot, you will also be getting Whiskey from the merchants frequently and should get more than you really need because it will be hard to get enough Hubflowers to keep up.
